Materials – Two hummingbird feeders, white paint, sugar water - made of one cup sugar and four cups water, heated and cooled, one per feeder. Process – Paint on feeder white and leave the other red. Fill both with the sugar water – never use jello, honey or artificial sweetener as these are harmful to the birds. Ask residents to watch which feeder the birds come to most often. Result – Hummingbirds are attracted to the color red. Scientist think this is because insects do not see red well while hummingbirds do. Thus the birds are attracted to the nectar of flowers in the color where there is less competition for food.
